Bradley Allen Scholarship Fund

Bradley Allen

A great friend of MoJazz, Brad Allen, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on June 19, 2009. Brad lost control of his newly acquired 2008 Honda CBR600RR and slid under a semi truck. Death was instantaneous.

Brad was my student (a newfound physics major at ISU-IF), a colleague, a motorcyclist, a family man and a good friend. I had the highest regard for him on all counts. Brad shared my excitement about science as well as motorcycles and was a dedicated student of both. Brad easily excelled in every course that he took from me. He would have certainly have graduated with honors had his life not been cut short. He was a good man.

Brad attended several lectures I gave on the the physics of motorcycles and I could see the gleam in his eye each time. We spoke often about his desire to get involved in the sport. I feel a sense of personal responsibility for Brad's loss. Though I am meticulous about safety and stress it (ad infinitum, ad nauseam, in fact) whenever I talk about the sport - I am quite sure that Brad, like a lot of young men, saw the wheelies and race trophies and let that blind him to the fact that there is a whole lot more than a quarter turn of a throttle between those first exciting fledgling rides and glory.

I have been working with Brad's family and Idaho State University to establish a scholarship endowment in his honor. The endowment will be used each year to award a scholarship to an Idaho State student of high quality and caliber - someone who embodies the qualities that made Brad Allen a fine human being, student and father.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 to endow this scholarship in Brad's name. If you would like to help you may send a check to the Idaho State University Foundation, Stop 8050, Pocatello, ID  83209-8050, or contribute online. Brad's family and I have been very pleased by the show of support this scholarship has received so far.

I'd take it as a personal favor if you contribute to this fund for a fellow motorcyclist in any amount - no matter how small. If you are a MoJazz reader please identify yourself as such if you are able to donate. Brad's wife, two young sons and parents don't know anything about motorcycling except for that fact that it claimed the life of their loved one. It will mean a lot to them to hear from the motorcycle community.

Thank you.
